Step 1 — Registrations before anything ships
You need an IEC (Importer-Exporter Code) from DGFT, GST registration, and an ICEGATE account for customs filings. All three are straightforward. The hard one is BIS: toys and several baby product categories are under mandatory certification, and the licence sits with the manufacturer under the FMCS scheme — a process that typically runs 4–8 months per factory. No BIS, no customs clearance. This single step is where most casual import plans end.
Step 2 — Supplier selection beyond the badge
Marketplace "verified" badges tell you a supplier paid for a listing tier, not that their QC is real. What works: audit reports you commission, factory videos with today's date, samples from production lines (not the showroom), and references from existing export clients. We keep a rejection log — more suppliers fail our audit than pass.
Step 3 — The money math
Landed cost is the only number that matters. On toys, basic customs duty plus surcharge and IGST can push the effective rate towards double the FOB price; feeding bottles and strollers carry lower duty but strict standards compliance (IS 14625, EN 1888 equivalents). Add freight, insurance, port handling, testing and financing costs before you compare against a wholesale price — imported-yourself is often not cheaper below container scale.
Step 4 — Shipment and clearance
Typical flow: purchase order with a 30/70 payment split, pre-shipment third-party inspection against an AQL plan, sea freight into Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai, Bill of Entry filed with BIS licence and test reports attached, customs sampling if flagged, then GST-paid goods into the warehouse. Sea transit from South China runs two to four weeks; clearance adds days when paperwork is clean and weeks when it is not.
Or: use ours
Everything above is fixed cost and lead time. If your volume is below a few hundred cartons per cycle, buying from a licensed importer at dealer rates usually beats running the stack yourself — which is precisely the trade ZUBBU wholesale offers: our licences, our QC, your margin.
